What is active rehabilitation?
Active Rehabilitation medicine is concerned with improving functioning through the diagnosis and treatment of health conditions, reducing impairments, and preventing or treating complications. Doctors with specific expertise in medical rehabilitation are referred to as physiatrists, rehabilitation doctors, or physical and rehabilitation specialists. Medical specialists such as psychiatrists, paediatricians, geriatricians, ophthalmologists, neurosurgeons, and orthopaedic surgeons can be involved in rehabilitation medicine, as can a broad range of therapists.
Who needs "Active Rehab"?
Active Rehabilitation is a progressive, dynamic, goal-oriented and often time-limited process, which enables an individual with impairment to identify and reach his/her optimal mental, physical, cognitive and social functional level. The goal of the Active Rehabilitation Program is to support individuals recovering from orthopaedic surgery, stroke and other medical conditions. Our team (Physician, Psychotherapist, Occupational therapist, Physiotherapist, Clinincal Case Manager, Kinesiologist) will work with you to set realistic and attainable goals that assist you in your wellness and recovery. It is our goal to assist patients in reaching their highest level of functional independence. You must have a referral and consented to treatment in the program, prior to admission.

• Psychological support
• Self-management advice
• Dietary advice and weight management
• Risky Behaviour/ Smoking cessation support
• Clinically supervised group and private exercise sessions
• Home-based exercise programmes

What should I expect after referral to ABC?
Your ABC Programme will provide an assessment from a clinical health team who specialize in supporting lifestyle change and self-management. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and talk about any concerns you may have regarding your condition. You will be assisted to set your own goals and will be offered a range of services that are appropriate to your needs to help you achieve these.
Once approved by your ICBC or 3rd party-payor adjustor, lawyer, case manager and/ or doctor, an initial assessment is performed which includes:
- Obtaining background information on medical history and treatments since your incident.
- Detailing general work demands and job requirements if applicable.
- Pre-test screening (including heart rate and blood pressure, weight, etc).
- Functional Movement Screens (FMS). Various range of motion testing. Quantitative measures including isometric strength, muscular strength and endurance, and cardiovascular endurance.
Following the on-boarding assessments we will provide our recommendations as to the number of sessions and the plan of action for approval. Once approved, an individualized program plan is developed. Each program is developed to consider both the nature of the injury and the occupational and leisure requirements of the patient. During exercise sessions, patients will be taught to perform their program’s exercises independently of the clinical health team. The number of sessions required to develop this independence will depend on the severity of injury and patient’s experience.
What is 'Lifestyle Health' rehabilitation?
Lifestyle rehab is the process of restoring the body’s physiology so that full healing is possible. In acute conditions, the outcomes of medicine and therapy are significant, in chronic conditions less and less so. There is a point where medical and therapeutic interventions come up short, because to fully heal requires that the healing come from the inside-out (i.e. from the body), not from the outside-in (e.g. drugs, modalities).
Who needs this program?
ABC treats and helps maintain the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of our Clients by seeking to reduce depression, stress, and anxiety; recover basic motor function and reasoning abilities; build confidence; and socialize effectively.
